Eolic Energy: Clean and Renewable Energy

Eolic energy is the energy obtained from the wind. It is one of the oldest energy resources exploited by humans and is today the most mature and efficient energy of all renewable energies. The term “wind” comes from the Latin “aeolicus”, pertaining to or related to Eolo, God of the winds in the Greek mythology. Eolic energy consists of converting the energy produced by the movement of the blades of a wind-driven wind turbine into electrical energy.

Eolic energy is a source of renewable energy, it does not pollute, it is inexhaustible and it reduces the use of fossil fuels, the origin of the greenhouse emissions that cause the global heating. In addition, wind energy is an autochthonous energy, available in virtually the entire planet, which contributes to reducing energy imports and creating wealth and employment locally.

Of all these advantages, it is important to note that wind energy does not emit toxic substances or air pollutants, which can be very harmful to the environment and to the human being. Toxic substances can acidify terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and corrode buildings. Air pollutants can trigger heart disease, cancer and respiratory diseases such as asthma.

Wind energy does not generate waste or water pollution, a very important factor taking into account water scarcity. Unlike fossil fuels and nuclear power plants, wind power has one of the lowest water footprints, making it a key to water resources preservation.

In order to take advantage of wind energy, it is important to know the diurnal, nocturnal and seasonal variations of the winds, the variation of the wind velocity with the height above the ground, the entity of the bursts in brief time spaces, and the maximum values occurred in historical data series with a minimum duration of 20 years. In order to be able to use the energy of the wind, it is necessary that it reaches a minimum speed that depends on the wind turbine to be used but usually starts between 10 km / hand 14, 4 km / h, called “cut-in speed”, and not exceeding 90 km / h, called “cut-out speed”.

Wind energy one of the Clean and Renewable Energies is used by using wind machines or wind turbines capable of transforming wind energy into usable rotational mechanical energy, either to directly drive the operating machines or to produce electrical energy. In the latter case, the most widely used today, the conversion system is known as a wind turbine. In these, the wind energy moves a propeller and by means of a mechanical system the rotor of a generator, usually an alternator, is turned to produce electric energy.

Wind energy remains the most efficient technology to produce energy in a safe and environmentally sustainable way: no emissions, indigenous, inexhaustible, competitive and creating wealth and employment.
